Another money saving tactic we use around here is making our own taco seasoning mix. The packets can be bought for a little over a buck a piece and they include all sorts of ingredients that are used for preserving and cost cutting and simply don’t need to be in your food!
This is my version of Old El Paso’s “regular” taco seasoning mix. Use it just like you would the packet – though I really like that you can use different quantities if you want to make up more or less meat in a given sitting! I make up a couple batches of the spices at at time and just use as needed – so I always have some on hand.
This is actually an old leftover jar from some store bought honey that I saved. It works perfectly!
6 TSP Chili Powder
5 TSP Paprika
4 1/2 TSP Cumin
2 1/2 TSP Onion Powder
1/2 TSP Garlic Powder
1/8 TSP Cayenne Powder – – this heat will be similar to the ‘original’ of El Paso, if you want some heat, feel free to add more!
Simple mix all the seasonings together and store in an airtight jar for up to a year. Use approximately 3 TBSP of seasoning mix and 2/3 cup of water for a pound of ground beef or you can eye ball it and make it as strong or as weak as you like. It also works really well with chicken.
